Senior School Curriculum Physical Education

Physical Education

Physical Education is at the centre of the vast amount of physical activity that goes on here at Clayesmore. The PE Department’s aims support those of the school, to develop the unique gifts of every girl and boy. Our two full-time, and two part-time, staff work hard at ensuring that all pupils appreciate the importance of physical activity in a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, we are looking to develop the talents of our most talented and able pupils so that they can compete at a representative level.

We do this by offering a broad programme of activities that encompass competitive and non-competitive activities, team games and individual pursuits, artistic and health promoting exercise. All pupils, up to Year 11, receive a double lesson in Core PE each week and for many this can be a highlight of the timetable. We have excellent sports facilities in our dedicated sports centre and a wealth of expertise and experience in the department that allows us to offer this broad and varied curriculum.

For those with a real interest in the subject we also offer academic PE at GCSE and A level. This year all candidates passed their exams, at all levels, and the pass rate at GCSE was almost 90% at A* and A.

Our Core PE lessons, undertaken by all pupils in years 9-11, involve a programme of study that encompasses: basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, health related exercise, swimming, lifesaving, water-polo, badminton, squash, athletics and tennis.

At GCSE level we are very strong in swimming and lifesaving, and all candidates produce a training project and play up to two team sports from the games programme.

A level candidates offer lifesaving and an additional sport where required.

We would hope that all pupils will leave Clayesmore with a desire to continue to participate in some form of physical exercise, whether this is a team game at a local club or joining a local fitness centre. Those with a real passion for the subject can look to study further at University and pursue a related career.
