Learn to Swim
The Clayesmore Sport Centre Swimming Programme’s philosophy is to provide a motivating environment to help develop and realise each swimmers potential, whether young or old.
Our programme aims to provide a safe environment in which each individual’s goals can be fulfilled, and to provide a situation where every participant can develop their swimming and glean many years of enjoyment. The Clayesmore Swimming Programme caters for swimmers of all ages and abilities. So, whether you are a parent wanting to introduce your infant to the water for the first time, or ensuring your child learns important life saving skills, or an adult wanting to learn to swim and/or improve technique and fitness, there will be something for you.
Your Teachers: All our staff are qualified and registered with the Amateur Swimming Association and have a minimum of three years teaching experience. We take great pride on constantly updating our knowledge by attend regular training seminars that help guarantee the quality of teaching in lessons to the highest possible standard.
Ali Pickford: Director of Swimming
Qualifications: ASA Swim Teacher, Level 1 & 2 & ASA Club Coach Ali is a full time member of the team and her role is overseeing the running of the entire swim programme. She teaches all abilities and ages and is also a coach for the Clayesmore Swim Club
Lyn Young:
Qualifications: ASA Swim Teacher, Level 1 & 2 & ASA Club Coach. ASA Timekeepers and Judges Certificate Lyn assists Ali in the running if the swim programme and is responsible for the adult beginner lessons and is the Head Coach for the Adult Swim Fit training. Lyn is also a coach for the Clayesmore Swim Club.
Paul Gowing: Head Coach
Qualifications: ASA Swim Teacher, Level 1 & 2 & ASA Club Coach Paul has over 15 years competitive swim coaching experience and was previously the Coach of the Poole Dolphin Swimming Club before joining Clayesmore. Whilst Paul’s main role is Head Coach for the Clayesmore Swimming Club, he really enjoys teaching and is a very valued member of the teaching team on the Learn to Swim Programme.
Angela Elms:
Qualifications: ASA Swim Teacher, Level 1 & 2. ASA Parent & Child Certificate. ASA Timekeepers Certificate. Angela is a full time member of staff at the Sports Centre as Administration officer, but also takes a very active role in the swimming department. Angela teaches the parent & pre-school lessons during the term time and is also available for private lessons during the holidays.
Esme Gibson:
Qualifications: ASA Swim Teacher, Level 1 & 2. Even though Esme is a part time teacher, she is a valuable member of the team and is loved by all the children she teaches. Esme also assist Lyn with the adult beginner lessons and is available for private lessons during the holidays.
Kelly Drake:
Qualifications: ASA Swim Teacher, Level 1 & 2. Kelly’s is a full time Duty Office in the Sports Centre, but also assists with children’s lesson on the Learn to Swim Programme and is available for private lessons during the school holidays.
Emma Williamson:
Qualification: ASA Swim Teacher, Level 2. Emma is a part-time Sports Centre Assistant in the Sports Centre whilst continuing her studies and teaches part time on the Learn to Swim Programme. Emma is currently at University in Wales but will be back in the holidays.
Children's Swimming Lessons: Term Time
Parent and Pre-School
Tuesdays: 1345-1415 (term time only) A relaxed lesson with music and toys. A qualified teacher is in the water with you, offering guidance and support to both parent and child. Aimed at babies and children under 4 ½ years. The lesson lasts for 30 minutes and cost £2.50, payable each time you attend. Please note that you do not have to stay in the water for the entire lesson, babies in particular will be quite happy with 10 or 15 minutes.
School-age Children, aged 4 ½ +
10 to 12 weeks of lessons structured to follow the ASA National Plan for Swimming. The Amateur Swimming Association scheme has been designed to provide a template for learn-to swim programmes and create consistency throughout the Country with regards to the provision of swimming.
The Lesson Group size is kept to a minimum to ensure a high standard of teaching and increase teacher-pupil contact. There will be a maximum of 12 children in each lesson. Children must be at least 4 ½ years of age. A lesson lasts 30 minutes and cost £4.25 per lesson, paid in advanced for the term.

Children's Swimming Lessons: School Holidays
Private Lessons:
To improve water confidence and stroke technique, we offer one to one and one to two lessons, which can be booked during the school holidays.
| Private 1:1 lessons: | £10.00 per half hour |
| Private 1:2 lessons: | £7.50 per half hour per child (children must be of a similar ability) |

Adult Swimming Lessons: Term Time
Adult Swimming Lessons:
Learn how to swim and gain confidence, learn new strokes, learn new water skills. What ever your need in the water we will give you all the support you need. Two instructors take this lesson with one in the water and one teaching on poolside.
